Ski technology

BACKLAND 107BACKLAND 107

CARBON BACKBONE

An ultra-lightweight carbon insert that runs the length of the ski like a stabilizing backbone. This provides exceptional agility and edge hold with no extra weight.

HRZN TECH TIP

HRZN Tech adds 10% more surface area at your ski tips. For awesome floatation in powder plus less tip deflection and better tracking through chop.

DURA CAP SIDEWALL

Sidewall from base to top sheet, for controlled power transmission and great edge grip. The rounded shape of the Dura Cap Sidewall picks up fewer dents and dings – a fantastic durability feature for skis in demo and rental fleets.

ULTRA LIGHT WOODCORE

The poplar and caruba woodcore for skis that are all about low weight, like our touring skis.

BACKLAND 107

AA0028176

The ski of choice for Atomic freeride athletes Sage Cattabriga-Alosa and Nick McNutt, Atomic Backland 107 delivers multipurpose backcountry performance in a wide and lightweight package. At 107mm underfoot this is one of the widest freeride touring skis, but still super light thanks to a full-length Carbon Backbone and Ultra Power Woodcore. The Powder Rocker (wider in the tip and narrower in the tail) and revolutionary HRZN Tech in the tip deliver more surface area for maximum flotation in deep pow. Capable of charging through crud and chop with total confidence, Dura Cap Sidewall allows for smooth and stable handling on harder snow. They pair perfectly with the 100% mohair Atomic MultiFit Skins, for maximum uphill performance. Created for big mountain skiers dropping big lines in big terrain, Atomic Backland 107 offers next level performance for a next level skiing experience.

Inside Atomic skis

BACKLAND 107 is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by telepariah from Hokkaido daily driver I was able to demo the Backland 107s while working as a tech in a magazine ski test two years ago. I telemark but I skied them in a 182 with AT bindings at the test. They were my favorite ski of the entire test. They were surprisingly agile for their width, fast enough to keep up with the other testers, who were all much younger and stronger than I am. And they were of course great in powder. After moving to Japan, I tried to be patient but finally decided I just had to have a pair. I got them in 189 because I thought the 182s skied short and I like to ski down the mountain in the fall line. In retrospect, I probably didn't need the 189s because I am old and a tele skier, but they are mine now. Over the summer I mounted them using inserts with 22 Designs Lynx on the recommended boot center line. Initially, I honestly had some trouble accessing the tip because of my softer boots and tele bindings. I kind of felt they were slow to respond. But after I added a set of inserts at +2 cm they were just right for me. Despite it being a second low snow season in a row, I skied them mostly in deep backcountry powder and they were fast, smooth, and dreamy in open alpine terrain and quick enough in trees. The light weight was nice for my decrepit body on the climbs. I've been used to much heavier skis for a long time. On steep firm snow I do prefer my Backland 102 FRs in 180 cm. Overall, I'm super happy with the 107s mounted at +2 and would recommend them to all my tele and alpine skiing friends.

Rated 5 out of 5 by VT guy from Don't listen to the ski shop guys I own the FR 109 version with a bit more rocker in the tip and tail and a shorter length of cambered section so a slightly different ski. Regardless, the skis are similar enough in profile to be comparable. I ski mostly east coast and the unanimous consensus among the ski shop people is; "a ski this wide and this light has no business on the east coast!". Don't listen to them. The ski is fantastic in a variety of conditions and just plain fun to be on. It is not the fastest thing on hard icy groomers but still very capable. It excels in anything from three inches to three feet. We had one dump in 2018 of 36 inches and as long as I keep 'em running down the fall line I was about the only one not getting stuck that day. It is super maneuverable in tight trees. Pivots at the speed of thought, can go from making one turn in a powder stash, to gripping on an icy bald spot on the next turn without skipping a beat. Predictable, intuitive with no surprises. You can turn it long, short, skidded or carved. Works in soft bumps, hard bumps, and weird in-between bumps that have no rhyme or reason to their form or consistency. Ski the zipper line or throw it across the fall line and make skidded turns. It is happy to do either. Hop turns? Yes, check. Narrow, tight lines of deep pow? Check. Awesome in spring corn, stable in chopped up pow, stays steady and on line through and over piles of loose granular at the end of the day on groomers. I ski it 1 cm forward of the factory recommended mount point. This makes it a touch more jibby and looser in the tail with a more neutral, upright stance / approach, or more grippy in hard pack if you drive the shins into the boot w/ a more aggressive style. Key is the ski responds favorably to two very different inputs. Versatile, forgiving, and yes, fun.

Rated 5 out of 5 by ssurt from Great, Great Ski The Backlands are pretty darn great. A qualification with apologies here: I have the 2017-18 FR 109s, i.e., last year's model. Not sure why they changed the ski's dimensions for this year, but it's not that different. The lightness of these skis is astounding. Their facility in crud and powder shouldn't surprise, but their ability as an all-mountain ski should. I didn't notice that big of a difference between my putative all-mountain skis--Atomic Vantage 90s--and the Backland FR 109s--on piste. These skis carve great on groomers. Sure they're overkill if all you do is stay on corduroy, but as an actual all-mountain ski, meaning you're hitting different types of snow and different parts of the mountain, I'd prefer the Backlands. (Atomic now has Vantage 107s--hmm, interesting--stocking stuffer idea for next xmas?!) They also didn't hinder at all in the terrain park, and the rear rocker is good for 180s, going backwards. Last, I didn't really notice a reduction of performance in moguls either, though that could just be due frequent user-error in bumps, no matter the ski. What size to buy? The Backlands ski much shorter due to the large double rocker, though the 107s might be less rockered. My Vantage 90s are 176, and I got the 182s for the FR 109s. That works fine, but I bet the 189s would have been good too--probably a little better in powder, crud; probably a little worse in other situations. One question to Atomic: What's the deal with only adding really interesting graphics once you get up to 120 waist skis and the Bent Chetler? Not that the Backlands look bad with some wood-grained parts--though this year's 107s graphics are pretty insipid, not a good change. Why do ski companies think interesting graphics are only for snowboarders and people that are REALLY serious powder-hounds?
